How to Harvest Basil

July 11, 2012

Either there has been a small bunny attack, or one of the basil plants was improperly harvested. Not a big deal, but this is a friendly reminder to please check with the garden intern by emailing before you harvest any significant quantities (say, more than a few leaves). But also, here is the best image I can find on the best-practice for harvesting basil:

Harvesting Basil

Click the image for an accompanying description. By harvesting this way, it allows the plant to focus growth into other stems, increasing the yield and increasing the overall health of the plant. Harvesting too far down, or leaf-by-leaf, can kill the plant.

The same method applies to all other leafy herbs. Cut a sprig at the stem, not too far down, leaving branching stems to continue growing.

Please continue to enjoy the garden, interact with all the growing things there, and trying new edibles as you are inspired. It is a space for everyone. Thank you!
